Electrical and Lighting Repair

Electrical Faults Found by Testing, Not by Parts

Rig Doctor traces truck and trailer electrical faults on site, from a dead battery bank or a failed alternator to a chafed chassis harness, which is the work their technicians get named for in reviews.

Trailer lighting faults that fail an inspection

Electrical is where a mobile technician earns the name. A code or a dead circuit tells you nothing about which of the forty splices behind the cab has corroded. Finding that takes a meter, a wiring diagram and patience, and it is the difference between a repair and a parts bill.

A chafed chassis wiring harness opened up in the technician’s hand

A crank with no start gets tested in order. State of charge, voltage drop across the cables, the starter circuit, the ignition and power feed, the ECM power and ground. Each test rules something out. Handing a driver a new starter because the truck would not crank is how a truck goes down twice in a week for the same fault.

Chassis harnesses are the quiet killer on high mileage equipment. They chafe against frame rails, they get cooked by an exhaust component, they take road salt through a split loom and they corrode from the inside out. Rig Doctor opens the loom, finds the damaged conductors and repairs them properly rather than splicing over a symptom.

Trailer lighting is the other half. A dead marker, an intermittent turn signal, a corroded seven way or a ground that only works over smooth pavement will all get written up in a Level One inspection. They are also all roadside repairs.

What That Covers

  • Crank and no start diagnosis on the shoulder
  • Battery bank, cable, starter and alternator testing
  • Chassis and trailer harness repair, not just splices
  • Seven way connectors, grounds, markers and turn signals
  • Jump starts when a jump start is actually the right answer

Read the Symptom

What It Usually Means

Clicks but will not turn over

Usually voltage drop rather than a dead starter. Cables and grounds get tested first.

Batteries keep going flat overnight

A parasitic draw. It is found by measuring, circuit by circuit, and it is very findable.

Lights work sometimes, mostly over bumps

A ground or a connector. Intermittent faults are still faults, and inspectors treat them as one.

Dash warning lights that make no sense together

Frequently a shared ground or a power feed rather than four separate failures.
